The #Endsars protest which originally started as an online campaign with thousands of youths participating, was marked as the largest national protest in Nigeria. Social Media was highly leveraged by Nigerian youths to fuel and sustain the protest, with hashtag gaining global attention.
On Saturday, the minister of information and culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the Federal “must” regulate social media in a manner that it does not become a purveyor of fake news and hate speech.
The minister disclosed this while visiting the offices of the Nation and TVC, which were attacked in the aftermath of the endsars protest.
The government announcement came under heavy criticism for calling for the regulation of social media after blaming social media for aggravated stories related to the endsars protest.
The minister added that “the federal government has no plans of shutting down social media as it would be undemocratic, but must regulate it in a manner that it does not become a purveyor of fake news and hate speech.
